Guide to enjoy the Feria de Santiago, the Semana Grande Santander (Santander's Big Week)

The Feria de Santiago is considered to be Santander’s Big Week, held every year at the end of July, with a host of events and activities, among which the bullfighting festivities play a leading role, welcoming people from all over Spain to enjoy the spectacular atmosphere of the city during this week.

Celebrated in honour of Santiago, patron saint of the city and of Spain, the Santander Fiestas officially kick off with the traditional and multitudinous “chupinazo”, which is launched from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento at around 21:30.

When does Semana Grande Santander take place?

The Semana Grande Santander is celebrated every year around 25th July, which is the day of St. James, patron saint of the city and of Spain and, in his honour, the city lives the Semana Grande of celebrations for a total of 10 days.

The Santander Fair begins in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento with the chupinazo and the animation of giants and big-heads and, throughout the days, there are countless concerts, activities, parades, performing arts shows, fireworks, gastronomic stalls, popular competitions and countless other activities.

With a unique atmosphere, the Day Fair is the biggest event of Santander’s festivities, which offers the people of Santander and visitors from all over the world more than 30 gastronomic stalls, which will be located in the car park of the Campos de Sport of El Sardinero, where you can enjoy the traditional flavours of the region, as well as folkloric performances and regional and bullfighting stalls.

Likewise, during the Santander Fair, multiple concerts are held in the Plaza Porticada, which provide the sound for the festivities and, one night, the Santiago fireworks are launched from the Second Beach of El Sardinero, which is one of the most special moments of the Semana Grande (Big Week).

The funfairs are set up in the car park of the Campos de Sport at El Sardinero.

When did the Fiestas de Santiago begin to be celebrated in Santander?

Santander’s Semana Grande has its origins in the feast of St. Santiago Apostle, patron saint of Spain, of the city of Santander and of numerous towns on the peninsula, which is celebrated every year on 25 July.

The year in which the Fiestas de Santiago began to be celebrated is unknown, although it is known that the tradition dates back to the 14th century.

Among the different events and celebrations, the Bullfighting Fair of Santiago stands out above the rest; a very exciting event that allows you to live an unforgettable experience, considered a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest.

Held in the Santander bullring, also known as the “Coso de Cuatro Caminos“, it is filled with passion and adrenaline with the bullfights of some of the leading figures in bullfighting.

Also known as the Great Fair of Northern Spain, the cycle consists of a total of seven consecutive days, in which bullfighting fans will be able to enjoy five bullfights, a bullfight with bullfighters and a bullfight with young bulls and a bullfight with young bulls.

Although the line-up for 2024 is not yet known, every year the best bullfighters of the moment are present at the Santander Bullfighting Fair, which means that it is common for the “no tickets available” sign to be hung up. For example, in 2023, it counted with the presence of figures such as Morante de la Puebla, El Juli, Alejandro Talavante, Daniel Luque, Diego Urdiales, José María Manzanares or Roca Rey, among others.

Typical things from Santander

If you are determined to come to the Semana Grande, beyond attending the “casetas”, the bullfights or the concerts, you should take advantage of your trip to enjoy the typical things to do in Santander, which will allow you to get the most out of the city and your experience:

  • One day you must eat the legendary Cocido Montañés, one of the most typical dishes of the region’s gastronomy, very different from the Cocido Madrileño, but equally or even more delicious.
  • Buy the prestigious sobaos pasiegos, a typical pastry from the Cantabrian region of the Valles Pasiegos.
  • Having chocolate with churros is one of the typical things to do in Santander, and you shouldn’t leave the city without enjoying them.
  • Taste one of the delicious ice creams from Regma, an ice cream parlour with 90 years of history, which is one of Santander’s best-known brands.
  • Stroll around the Palacio de la Magdalena and its surroundings.
  • Have a pincho de tortilla and a plate of Iberian ham at any of the restaurants in the El Riojano group.
  • Cross the Bay by boat.
  • Stroll along the Sardinero.
  • Take the Rio de la Pila funicular and enjoy the views of the city.
  • Spend a day at the Puntal.
  • Go to a bullfight in Santander.
