At the end of July, Santander celebrates its big week in honor of the patron saint of Spain, the Apostle Santiago. Its origin is found in the mid-nineteenth century, when some festivals that were held in summer, with fair and bulls, began to take atmosphere and the City Council decided to expand them. Today they are of Regional Tourist Interest and begin with the chupinazo from the balcony of the town hall.
The Santander Bullfighting Fair is an essential part of one of the most important in northern Spain. It takes place the week of July 25 (definitive dates to be confirmed) and the best bullfighters and riders will be present. Santander also does not forget how important it is to take care of the future of the young promises of bullfighting and celebrates a novillada with the most outstanding young bullfighters of the season. The bullring of Cuatro Caminos has become the annual meeting point of the Cantabrian fans; we will enjoy the most usual bullfighters in this bullring Morante de la Puebla, Roca Rey, Diego Urdiales or Ginés Marín among others; there will be no lack of posters of figures and surprises; and of course we will have a great variety of livestock.
Declared of Regional Tourist Interest, around July 25, the feast of St. James, the city celebrates the Semana Grande in his honor. They begin in the Town Hall Square with the chupinazo and the inauguration of the Day Fair, with the animation of giants and big-heads.
In the following days the city is filled with parades, children’s activities, performing arts shows, fireworks, popular contests, concerts in different parts of the city: Piquío Gardens, Plaza Porticada or Palacio de Deportes; popular festivals in the auditorium of the San Roque Park, in the Sardinero…
Folklore and local bands also play an important role during the festivities. The Day Fair has booths spread over seven areas of the city: City Hall Square, Alameda de Oviedo, Plaza de Pombo, Plaza del Cuadro, Plaza Alfonso XIII, Puertochico and Mesones Park. And the Peñas have a special role in the animation of the Fiestas and organize their own activities. They are La Pera, La Pirula, La Panderetuca, El Desfiladero and Los Vividores.
In addition, among the main attractions is the Bullfighting Fair of Santiago, which is held in the bullring of Cuatro Caminos and is one of the most important in northern Spain.
