History of the bullring of Santander; Coso de Cuatro Caminos
The bullring of Santander was inaugurated on July 25, 1890, coinciding with the day of Santiago, which is a holiday in the city. The construction was carried out from the project of Alfredo de la Escalera, and at first had a capacity of 11,700 seats, almost doubling that of the old square, which had a total of 6,700 seats.
It has two floors and is made of masonry, iron, brick and wood. On the upper floor there is a neo-Mudéjar style arcade with the irons and insignia of the Spanish cattle ranches existing at the time of construction of the bullring; except for one, which was invented by the architect to keep the symmetry and which represents a crab with an S for Santander.
Today, the Coso de Cuatro Caminos has a capacity for 10,045 people, after a reform carried out in 2013, with the aim of making the square more comfortable for the spectators. The bullring has a diameter of 51 meters.
